On the evening of the 31 March the service of Compline with the Akathistos Hymn and canon of the Akathist was celebrated with great solemnity in at the church of the 318 Holy Fathers in Shrewsbury. The hymns were chanted in English and Greek. The service is a beautiful meditation on the announcements made by the Holy Prophets who foretold the incarnation of our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ. The first and last ikos of the Akathistos tells of the great captain of the Archanegls, Gabriel, who was sent by God to the Theotokos to announce that she would bear God within her womb.
